What Should You Bring to Your Studio Newborn Session? A Complete Checklist for New Parents

If you're anything like most of the parents I work with, you've probably wondered, "What on earth am I supposed to bring to a newborn photography session?"
First things first—take a deep breath.
The newborn stage is exhausting enough without worrying about packing for one more outing. My goal is to make your experience as easy and stress-free as possible, so I've thoughtfully stocked my natural light studio with many of the things you and your baby might need. That means you can pack light, settle in, and simply enjoy this special time with your newest family member.
Here's what I recommend bringing to your newborn session.
Your Baby (Of Course!)
It may sound obvious, but your baby is truly the only "must-have."
Everything else is simply there to make the experience more comfortable. If you happen to forget something, don't panic. We'll figure it out together.

Plenty of Milk
Whether you're breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or doing a combination of both, I always recommend bringing enough milk for a few extra feedings. I have a bottle warmer for your convenience.
Newborn sessions are baby-led, which means we pause whenever your little one needs to eat, be cuddled, or simply take a break. Babies often feed more frequently during sessions because they're warm, cozy, and being gently moved between poses.
If you're pumping, bringing an extra bottle or two can give you peace of mind.

Extra Diapers and Wipes
Let's be honest—babies have impeccable timing.
It's completely normal for several diaper changes to happen during a newborn session, so having a few extras packed is always a good idea. I always have natural bamboo diapers and wipes you are welcome to use as well.
And yes... accidents on blankets and wraps are simply part of the job. I promise nothing surprises me anymore!
A Pacifier (Even If You Rarely Use One)
If you've chosen to introduce a pacifier, I recommend bringing it along.
Many babies never need it during their session, but occasionally a pacifier can help soothe them for a moment while transitioning between poses. It isn't required, but it can be a helpful tool to have available.

Sentimental Items (If You'd Like)
One of my favorite ways to personalize a session is by incorporating meaningful heirlooms.
This could be a handmade blanket from Grandma, a special stuffed animal, your wedding veil, a family quilt, or another item that tells your family's story.
Simple, meaningful touches often become some of your favorite photographs.
An Outfit for Family Photos
If your session includes parent and sibling portraits (which I highly recommend!), I suggest arriving in soft, neutral colors.
Creams, whites, light grays, and earthy tones photograph beautifully and create timeless images that won't feel dated years from now.
The focus should always be on your connection—not busy patterns or bright colors.

A Change of Clothes... Just in Case
Newborns are wonderfully unpredictable.
Spit-up, milk dribbles, and diaper blowouts are all part of life with a new baby, so having an extra shirt for yourself can provide a little peace of mind.
Hopefully you won't need it—but you'll be glad it's there if you do.
What You Don't Need to Bring
This is one of my favorite parts.
You don't need to bring wraps, blankets, tiny outfits, headbands, bonnets, or baskets unless there's something special you'd like included.
My studio is fully stocked with a carefully curated collection of timeless newborn wraps, delicate knit outfits, handcrafted headbands, bonnets, blankets, and simple props. Everything is chosen with a clean, classic style in mind so your photographs feel just as beautiful years from now as they do today.
Many moms are also relieved to hear that I have a bottle warmer available, along with coffee, tea, water, and light snacks to help keep everyone comfortable during the session.

A Relaxed Experience for Growing Families
My Black Mountain studio was designed to feel calm, welcoming, and comfortable for new parents. From the natural light that fills the space to the cozy seating area and thoughtfully curated newborn wardrobe, every detail is intended to make your session feel less like an appointment and more like a peaceful morning spent celebrating your growing family.
If you're expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Asheville, Black Mountain, or the surrounding Western North Carolina area, I'd be honored to help preserve these first precious days.
Together, we'll create timeless photographs that tell the beginning of your family's story—without adding any extra stress to your already full diaper bag.
