Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful moment—not just for parents, but for big brothers and sisters too. As a newborn photographer (and a mom myself), I know firsthand how exciting, emotional, and even a little overwhelming this transition can be for young siblings.

When families arrive at my studio with a newborn and a toddler or young child in tow, there’s often a mix of energy: excitement, curiosity, and sometimes a bit of uncertainty. If you're reading this and wondering how your older child will really do during the session—take a deep breath. You’re not alone. And you’re in the right place.

Every Emotion Is Welcome

Your toddler might be eager to hold the baby, or they might want nothing to do with their new sibling (for now). Both reactions are completely normal. I create space for those big feelings, whatever they may be. I never force poses or interactions that don’t feel natural. Instead, I use gentle guidance, play, and patience to help siblings warm up, connect, and shine. Sometimes it means taking breaks. Sometimes it means letting your child run barefoot through the studio for a few minutes before coming back to sit beside their baby sibling. My sessions are child-led and completely pressure-free. As a former preschool and elementary teacher, I love working with young children.

A Space That Feels Like Home

My studio is designed with little ones in mind. I keep a variety of toys, books, and quiet activities on hand to help siblings feel comfortable and entertained while we photograph your newborn. Whether they need a break or just want something to do while waiting for their turn, I’ve got it covered. And as someone who genuinely loves working with young children, I bring a lot of patience and flexibility into every session. There's no rush, no pressure—just a calm environment where your child can feel safe and seen.

Timing Is Everything

When siblings are involved, I always aim to photograph them at the very beginning of the session. Why? Because little ones have a short window before they’re ready to move on—and that’s okay! After we capture those sweet sibling moments (whether it’s a big bear hug or a quiet snuggle), one parent is welcome to take them for a walk, head home, or relax in the studio while I focus on your newborn.

Safety and Comfort Come First

Every sibling pose is done with baby’s safety in mind. If your older child isn’t quite ready to hold the baby, there are still so many creative ways to photograph them together—laying side by side, sitting next to the baby in a cozy setup, or even reaching out with a tiny hand or kiss. These simple moments often become the most meaningful ones.

Set Expectations—but Keep It Light

Before the session, talk with your child about what to expect. Let them know they’ll get to take pictures with the baby and maybe even help out. But don’t stress if they’re unsure or silly—those little quirks are part of the story you’ll want to remember.

If your child has a favorite snack, toy, or song that brings comfort, feel free to bring it! And please know, there’s no judgment here. I’ve seen tantrums, tears, and total meltdowns—followed by giggles and magic minutes later. It's all part of the journey.

The truth is, sibling photos during a newborn session are about more than the perfect pose. They’re about capturing your growing family in a way that feels real, gentle, and full of love.

If you're expecting and wondering how to navigate a newborn session with siblings in tow, I’d love to chat with you. Together, we’ll create a relaxed, joy-filled experience that celebrates each member of your family—big and small.
