8 Tips for Beautiful, Family Photos | Asheville & Black Mountain Family Photographer

If you've ever thought, "I'd love family photos... but my kids will never sit still," you're definitely not alone.
In fact, it's probably the number one concern I hear from parents before their session.
The good news? They don't have to.
The most meaningful family photos rarely come from everyone looking perfectly at the camera. They come from the laughter after a silly joke, the way your toddler reaches for your hand, or the spontaneous hug that no one planned. Those are the moments that tell your family's story.
Whether you're planning family photos in Asheville, Black Mountain, or anywhere in Western North Carolina, these are my favorite tips for creating a relaxed, joyful session you'll actually enjoy.
1. Coordinate Your Outfits Instead of Matching
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans.
Choose colors that complement one another rather than matching exactly. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted blues, warm greens, and textured fabrics photograph beautifully against the natural landscapes we have here in Western North Carolina.
One of my favorite tricks? Start with Mom's outfit first, then build everyone else's around it. It makes choosing outfits so much easier.

2. Don't Worry About Your Kids Being "Perfect"
This one deserves its own section because it's so important.
Your children do not need to sit still, smile on command, or behave perfectly for us to create beautiful images.
Honestly, I hope they don't.
Some of my favorite photographs happen while kids are running through a field, splashing in a creek, picking wildflowers, or giggling after being tickled by Mom or Dad.
I spend much of each session playing games, telling silly jokes, and creating opportunities for natural connection. The goal isn't perfect behavior—it's genuine joy.

3. Trust Your Photographer
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that you need to know how to pose.
You don't.
I'll guide you every step of the way so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look. Instead of stiff poses, I'll encourage movement, conversation, and connection so your photos feel natural instead of forced.

4. Think of It as Family Time, Not Picture Time
The sessions that feel the most magical are the ones where families simply enjoy being together.
Some of my favorite activities include:
Walking hand in hand down a trail
Playing in a mountain creek
Blowing bubbles
Sharing ice cream
Dancing together
Having a picnic
Exploring beautiful mountain overlooks
When everyone is having fun, authentic moments happen naturally.

5. Stay Close Together
Parents often instinctively spread out when we begin taking photos.
Instead, do the opposite.
Snuggle your babies close. Hold hands. Wrap your arms around each other. Lean in.
Connection is what transforms a nice photo into one that makes you feel something every time you look at it.

6. Embrace the Imperfect Moments
Your toddler might refuse shoes.
Someone may have grass stains.
Your baby might need a snack halfway through.
Your preschooler might only want to be carried.
Those moments aren't ruining your session—they're documenting this season of life exactly as it is.
Years from now, you'll smile because you'll remember exactly who your children were during this stage.

7. Trust the Process
While every family loves a few smiling-at-the-camera portraits, those usually become just a small part of your final gallery.
The photographs you'll treasure most are often the ones you weren't expecting:
Your daughter wrapping her tiny arms around your neck.
Your son reaching for your hand.
The look your partner gives your children when they aren't watching.
Those little in-between moments become the memories that matter most.

8. Print Your Photos
Your photographs deserve more than living on your phone.
Print them.
Hang them on your walls.
Create albums your children can flip through years from now.
Family photographs become part of your home's story, reminding your children every day just how deeply
they are loved.
