Asheville Family Photography at Black Balsam | A Sweet Mountain Session

There’s something about watching parents with their first baby that always gets me. The way they look at this little person they’ve only known for a handful of months but somehow can’t imagine life without. The way they make each other laugh, sneak in kisses, and hold on just a little tighter.
I recently had the sweetest family photography session at Black Balsam Knob, just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. This family of three brought their adorable six-month-old along for an evening in the mountains, and between the breathtaking views and the love these parents have for their little one, it was pretty much everything I adore about being a family photographer.
But as beautiful as the mountains were, they weren't my favorite part of this session.

Six Months Old and Already Making Mountain Memories
Six months might not seem like a long time, but when you have a baby, it's practically a lifetime.
Think about how much changes in those first six months. The tiny newborn you brought home is suddenly full of personality. There are belly laughs, little hands reaching for your face, and that sweet smile they save just for you.
And somehow, it all happens so quickly.
As a photographer and a parent myself, I know just how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day. The feeding schedules, the naps, the laundry that never seems to end. Sometimes it's hard to recognize just how special this season is when you're right in the middle of it.
That's one of the reasons I love photographing families with babies. These sessions give us a chance to capture those fleeting little details, but also something even more meaningful: the connection between a family as they grow together.
During this session, I loved watching these two parents snuggle their baby against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There were sweet smiles, plenty of cuddles, and those little in-between moments that I always find myself drawn to.
And I couldn't help but think about how much these images will mean to them years from now.

Why Black Balsam Is One of My Favorite Locations for Family Photos Near Asheville
If you've ever been to Black Balsam Knob, you already know why photographers love it.
Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, Black Balsam offers some of the most breathtaking mountain views in Western North Carolina. Unlike many mountain locations where the scenery is hidden behind dense trees, the open landscape here gives us sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
And the light? Oh, the light.
There's something magical about the way the evening sun settles over the mountains, especially in the fall. The soft, warm light and layers of blue ridgelines create a beautiful backdrop without taking attention away from the people in the photographs.
That's exactly what I love about photographing families here.
The scenery is incredible, but it never needs to be the whole story.
As an Asheville family photographer, I'm always looking for locations that feel beautiful without requiring families to stand in one spot and smile at the camera for an hour. Black Balsam gives us room to move around, enjoy the scenery, and create images that feel natural and full of life.
It's especially lovely for families who want their photos to reflect their love of the outdoors and the mountains that make Western North Carolina so special.

You Don't Have to Wait Until Your Baby Is Older for Family Photos
One thing I wish more parents knew is that you don't have to wait until your baby can sit perfectly, walk, or follow directions to schedule family photos.
In fact, some of my favorite family sessions happen when babies are still small enough to fit perfectly in their parents' arms.
At six months old, babies are often full of expressions and beginning to show off their personalities. There are so many sweet moments to capture, even if the entire session happens while they're being held.
And for outdoor family sessions, that's perfectly fine!
You don't need your baby to do anything other than be themselves.
We'll capture the way you hold them, the way they look up at you, and all those little interactions that make this season so special.
My approach to family photography is relaxed and connection-focused. I want you to spend less time worrying about whether everyone is looking at the camera and more time simply enjoying being together.
Because years from now, I have a feeling the photos you'll treasure most won't necessarily be the ones where everyone is perfectly posed.
They'll be the ones that remind you what it felt like to hold your baby when they were still this little.

Family Photos That Feel Like You
Whether we're photographing your family on top of a mountain, in a field near Asheville, or at one of your favorite spots around Black Mountain, my goal is always the same.
I want your photos to feel like your family.
Not a perfectly polished version where everyone is sitting still and smiling on command. The real, beautiful, sometimes wonderfully chaotic version.
The snuggles. The laughter. The little hands reaching for yours. The way your child looks at you like you're their entire world.
Of course, we'll capture those classic family portraits that deserve a place on your walls, too. But I also want to give you photographs that bring back the feeling of this exact season of your life.
Because one day, that six-month-old baby will be a whole lot bigger. Those little arms won't wrap around your neck quite the same way, and picking them up won't be quite so easy.
And you'll be so glad you have these moments to look back on.
