If you've ever dreamed of stepping into the opening scene of The Sound of Music, there's a place just outside Asheville where that feeling comes to life.

Black Balsam Knob is hands-down one of my favorite kid-friendly hikes near Asheville, North Carolina.

With rolling grassy mountaintops, endless blue ridgelines, and breathtaking 360-degree views, it feels less like a hike and more like wandering through a postcard.

As a family photographer in Asheville, I'm always looking for places that make families slow down, explore, and connect. Black Balsam is one of those rare spots that feels adventurous without being overwhelming, making it perfect for families with kids who are ready for a little mountain magic.

Why Families Love Black Balsam

One of the best things about Black Balsam is that you don't have to hike for hours to reach the incredible views.

After a short walk from the parking area, the forest opens up and suddenly you're surrounded by sweeping mountain vistas in every direction. Kids love the wide-open spaces where they can run, climb, and explore without feeling confined to a narrow trail.

The hike to the summit is relatively short and rewarding, which means fewer complaints and more opportunities to soak in the scenery.

And what scenery it is.

At over 6,200 feet in elevation, Black Balsam offers some of the most dramatic views in Western North Carolina. From the top, you'll see layer upon layer of Blue Ridge Mountains stretching to the horizon. On a clear day, it feels like you can see forever.

A Mountain Bald Unlike Anywhere Else

What makes Black Balsam so unique is that it's a "bald"—a mountaintop covered in grasses and shrubs rather than dense forest.

The result is a landscape that feels surprisingly similar to the alpine meadows you might find in Europe. Every time I visit, I'm reminded of Julie Andrews twirling across those iconic green hills in The Sound of Music.

There's something incredibly freeing about standing on top of the bald with the wind blowing, the mountains surrounding you, and nothing blocking the view.

It's the kind of place that makes both kids and adults stop and say, "Wow."

Tips for Visiting Black Balsam with Kids

A little preparation goes a long way when visiting Black Balsam.

Here are a few things I recommend:

  • Arrive early, especially on weekends.

  • Bring layers, even in summer. Temperatures can be much cooler at higher elevations.

  • Pack snacks and water. It's a great place for a picnic!

  • Wear sturdy shoes, as some sections are rocky.

  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts, since conditions can change quickly on the mountain.

  • Don't forget the sunscreen. Most of the trail is exposed.

  • Plan extra time because your kids will want to explore every rock and grassy hill they see.

The Perfect Place for Family Memories

As much as I love the views, my favorite part of visiting Black Balsam is watching families experience it together.

Kids race up the trail, parents take in the scenery, and everyone seems to forget about screens and schedules for a little while.

Those genuine moments of connection are exactly why I love photographing families in the mountains around Asheville.

Whether you're visiting Western North Carolina for the first time or you're a local looking for a family adventure, Black Balsam is one of those places that deserves a spot on your bucket list.

The hike is short, the views are unforgettable, and the experience feels like stepping into a storybook.

And if you'd love to preserve those mountain memories with professional photos, I'd love to help. Family sessions in the Asheville area are designed to be relaxed, playful, and full of the real moments that make your family unique.

Because years from now, your kids may not remember every detail of the hike—but they'll remember how it felt to stand on top of a mountain together.
