Full Session vs. Mini Session: Which One Is Right for Your Family?

Hey there, fellow memory-makers! As a family photographer, one of the most common questions I get is: “Should we book a full session or a mini session?” It’s a great question — and the answer totally depends on your family, your goals, and honestly, your season of life (hello, toddlers who can maybe give us 15 good minutes max 🫣).

So let’s break it down, side-by-side, full session vs. mini session. Spoiler alert: there’s no wrong choice here — just what fits you best right now.

The Full Session Experience

Ahhh, the full session — my personal favorite when time and attention spans allow. Think of this as a relaxed, storytelling session where we can breathe, play, and capture all the in-between magic.

Pros:

  • Time to relax: With up to an hour (sometimes more), we don’t have to rush. Kids (and adults) can warm up to me and my camera, and we can capture a great mix of candid and posed moments. This is especially helpful for shy children and adults.

  • More variety: Multiple locations or outfit changes? We’ve got time for it. This is great for families who want a well-rounded gallery.

  • Deeper connection: The longer time gives us space to document real interactions — belly laughs, sweet snuggles, that epic sibling piggyback ride.

  • Ideal for special milestones: Perfect for maternity, extended families, or if you haven’t had photos in years.

  • Client Closet: Full session clients have the opportunity to borrow outfits from my client closet. No need to worry about finding outfits for the family that coordinate! I've got you covered!

  • Choice of location: Full session clients choose the location of their session. I have a Location Guide of some of my favorite locations in WNC for those that need a little inspiration.

Con:

  • Higher cost: Full sessions are priced higher, but with that comes a larger gallery, more choice, more options and more flexibility.

The Mini Session Magic

Mini sessions are like the espresso shot of photography — quick, energizing, and just what you need when you want a little dose of family photo joy.

Pros:

  • Short & sweet: Mini sessions last 15 minutes, which great for extroverted kids with limited patience (or adults who would rather be anywhere else than in front of a camera 😄).

  • Lower cost: A more affordable way to update your family photos — perfect for holiday cards, seasonal snapshots, or annual tradition.

Cons:

  • Less flexibility and more pressure: We’re working within a tight schedule and set location. If your child needs extra time to warm up, we may not get as many images. This can lead to stress for parents and children.

  • Limited variety: One outfit, one backdrop, and less time for those spontaneous in-between moments.

  • High demand: Minis often book quickly since I only offer them a few times a year. Blink and they’re gone!

So… Which Should You Choose?

  • If you want a laid-back experience, lots of images, and space to truly be together: Go full session.

  • If you're craving just a few updated photos with less time and commitment: Mini session, all the way.

Still can’t decide? I’m always happy to chat and help guide you to the best fit for your crew. After all, these photos are about you — your love, your laughs, your story. No matter which session you choose, I’m here to help you feel relaxed, beautiful, and connected — because that’s where the real magic happens. 💛

Ready to book? Keep an eye on my calendar — full sessions are available year-round, and minis pop up seasonally (hint: fall books fast 🍂).

Let’s make some memories!
