Mini sessions are like the Blue Ridge Parkway in October — short, sweet, and surprisingly magical. But if the thought of getting everyone ready makes you want to hide behind a mountain, don’t worry! After photographing lots of families here in Asheville and Black Mountain, I’ve gathered my best (and most sanity-saving) tips to help your mini session feel smooth, stress-free, and even fun. Yes… FUN.

1. Choose Outfits That Feel Good (and Look Good Together!)

Coordinating outfits doesn’t mean matching like you’re all starring in a denim commercial. Think of your family’s outfits like the mountains at sunset — different tones working beautifully together. Soft neutrals, earthy colors, and simple textures always photograph well against our lush WNC backdrops.

Most importantly? Wear things you can move in. If your toddler needs chasing or your preschooler insists on being upside down, you’ll be glad you’re dressed for it.

2. Arrive a Few Minutes Early (Mountain Time Doesn’t Count!)

Mini sessions are quick and magical — emphasis on quick. Arriving 5–10 minutes early gives everyone time to shake out wiggles, smooth flyaways, and get comfortable before the camera comes out. No need to rush or panic-park at the last minute. Give yourself a little buffer and let the mountains work their calming magic.

3. Bring a Stain-Free Treat for the Kids

Kids are my favorite little wildflowers to photograph, but sometimes they need a tiny bit of motivation. Bring a small, immediate treat — think smarties, mini marshmallows, fruit snacks, a bottle of whipped cream or anything that doesn’t stain mouths or fingers. (We love blueberries, but they turn your kid into a crime-scene suspect real fast.)

Treats can work wonders for smiles, cooperation, and bribery negotiations.

4. Set Expectations… Lightly

Before your session, give your kiddos a simple, upbeat “heads up.” Something like:“We’re going to meet a photographer, take some silly pictures, and play together for a few minutes!”

Kids respond best when the vibe is relaxed and fun, not high-pressure. Honestly, some of the best photos happen when kids are being themselves — running, twirling, giggling, or proudly handing me a random leaf.

5. Have Fun and Enjoy the Moment

This is the most important tip, and I saved it for last because it’s the heart of everything I photograph.

Take a deep breath, soak in the laughter, cuddle your little ones, and enjoy these few minutes together. Mini sessions go by quickly — like a mountain breeze — but the memories captured will last for years. When you’re having fun, it shows in every single image.

At the end of the day, preparing for a mini session doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little planning, a few kid-friendly tricks, and a willingness to embrace the beautiful chaos of family life, your session can feel effortless and joyful. These short sessions are meant to capture your family exactly as you are — connected, playful, and full of love. So take a breath, trust the process, and get ready for photos you’ll treasure long after the mountains fade into sunset.
