What Happens If It Rains During Your Family Photo Session?

One of the biggest concerns moms have before booking an outdoor family session is usually the same question:
“But what if it rains?”
And honestly? I completely understand why.
Planning family photos with young children already feels like a lot sometimes. You’re coordinating outfits, trying to schedule around naps, packing snacks and backup snacks, hoping everyone is in a good mood, and mentally preparing yourself to smile through the chaos if your toddler decides they suddenly hate photos altogether.
So when the weather forecast starts showing rain clouds? It can feel incredibly stressful.
But here’s the good news: rain does not automatically ruin your session.
In fact, some of the most meaningful, emotional, and joy-filled sessions I’ve ever photographed happened during cloudy skies or light rain.

First Things First: We Always Have a Backup Plan
If the weather looks truly miserable — heavy rain, storms, freezing temperatures, or unsafe conditions — we can absolutely reschedule your session.
I want your experience to feel relaxed and enjoyable from beginning to end. The last thing I want is for you to spend the entire day anxious about the forecast.
Outdoor family sessions should feel like time spent together, not another stressful thing on your to-do list.
So yes, rescheduling is always an option when needed.

But Sometimes… Rain Creates the Best Memories
Here’s something I’ve learned after photographing so many families over the years:
Kids almost never care about the weather as much as adults do.
They care about connection. They care about play. They care about whether they’re allowed to splash in puddles.
Some of the sweetest moments happen when families stop trying to make everything perfect and simply embrace what the day gives them.
Rainy sessions often look like:
Cozy cuddles under umbrellas
Barefoot puddle jumping
Wind-blown hair and genuine laughter
Kids snuggled close to mom and dad
The kind of playful moments that feel real and alive
And honestly? Those are usually the photos parents treasure most years later.
Not because everything looked perfect. But because the images remind them exactly what this season of
life felt like.

The Truth About “Perfect” Family Photos
I think a lot of moms put pressure on themselves for family photos to go perfectly.
Perfect weather.Perfect smiles.Perfect outfits.Perfectly behaved children.
But the truth is, perfection rarely creates the most meaningful images.
Connection does.
Your kids won’t remember whether the sky was cloudy that evening. They’ll remember running through the grass with you. They’ll remember being held close. They’ll remember laughing together.
And someday, those are the moments you’ll want documented most.

Rainy Sessions Photograph Beautifully
This surprises a lot of people, but rainy and cloudy days can actually create incredibly beautiful images.
Soft cloudy light is flattering and dreamy. Rain often adds warmth, coziness, movement, and emotion to photographs in a way sunny skies sometimes can’t.
There’s something incredibly magical about families leaning into the unexpected together.
The photos end up feeling emotional, intimate, playful, and real.

Don’t Let Weather Stop You From Making Memories
If you’ve been putting off booking family photos because you’re nervous about weather, let this be your reminder that we’ll figure it out together.
Sometimes we reschedule.Sometimes we dance in the rain.Either way, beautiful memories are still possible. 💛
