Why Summer is One of the Best Times for Family & Maternity Photos in Asheville

There are some sessions that leave you smiling long after you've packed up your camera, and this recent maternity session in the mountains was definitely one of them.
On a warm summer evening, I met this sweet family in a grassy field overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. As golden light settled across the landscape, they spent the evening exactly as they should—laughing together, cuddling close, and soaking in these final moments as a family of three before becoming a family of four.
As an Asheville family photographer, I get to witness a lot of beautiful connections, but there was something especially sweet about this session. Their little one was full of excitement, mom and dad were completely present with each other, and every moment felt effortless. There were no forced smiles or stiff poses—just genuine joy and anticipation for the baby they will soon welcome.

The Magic of Summer Family Sessions
One of the reasons I love photographing families during the summer months is how relaxed everything feels.
The weather is warm, the mountains are lush and green, and families naturally settle into the experience. Kids can run through the grass, parents can focus on connecting rather than worrying about jackets or chilly temperatures, and the longer evenings give us beautiful golden light to work with.
Summer sessions also offer some of the most stunning landscapes Western North Carolina has to offer. The mountain views are vibrant, wildflowers begin to bloom, and every location feels alive with color and texture.
For families with young children, summer can be especially ideal. Little ones often feel more comfortable outdoors with room to explore, which allows me to capture authentic interactions instead of asking them to sit still and smile at the camera.
Why Maternity Sessions Matter
Pregnancy is one of life's most transformative seasons, yet it often passes by in what feels like the blink of an eye.
Between preparing the nursery, attending appointments, and caring for your growing family, it's easy to forget to document this chapter. That's why maternity sessions are so meaningful. They create space to pause and celebrate the incredible journey you're on.
For this family, the session wasn't just about documenting a pregnancy. It was about preserving the connection they share right now—the way their child snuggles close to mom's growing belly, the excitement in their smiles, and the love that will soon welcome a new baby into their family.
Years from now, these photographs will tell the story of who they were before everything changed in the most beautiful way.

Capturing Connection Over Perfection
When families book a session with me, my goal isn't simply to create beautiful portraits. It's to document the relationships, emotions, and little moments that make your family unique.
The laughter between siblings. The hand squeezes. The forehead kisses. The way your child wraps their arms around your neck.
Those are the memories that matter most.
This session was filled with all of those moments, and it served as a reminder that the best photographs often come from simply being together.

Planning Your Asheville Family or Maternity Session
If you've been thinking about scheduling family photos or documenting your maternity journey, summer is one of the most beautiful times of year to do it.
From sweeping mountain views to golden sunset light, Asheville and the surrounding Western North Carolina area provide the perfect backdrop for preserving your family's story.
Whether you're expecting your first baby, preparing to welcome another little one, or simply wanting to capture this season with the people you love most, I'd be honored to help tell your story.
Because these days may feel ordinary now, but one day they'll be the memories you'll treasure most.
