Why Your Home Might Be the Perfect Place for Family Photos This Summer

When this family's maternity session was unexpectedly interrupted halfway through, I'll admit—I was disappointed.

We had planned everything carefully, found the perfect evening, and then life threw us a curveball that none of us could have anticipated.

Thankfully, we were able to get back together a few days later to finish the session.

Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing.

Instead of heading somewhere new, we spent the evening right where this family's story is unfolding every day: at home.

They spread a quilt across the front lawn. They danced together, laughed until their cheeks hurt, and talked about the baby who would soon make them a family of four (or six if you count the dogs—which I absolutely do).

It wasn't elaborate.

It wasn't a famous overlook or a mountain peak.

It was simply home.

And somehow, it was perfect.

That session reminded me of something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Sometimes we're so focused on finding the perfect location for family photos that we overlook the place that's already filled with the most meaning.

Home Is Where Your Story Is Happening

Your children won't remember every scenic overlook you've ever visited.

But they'll remember your front yard.

They'll remember catching lightning bugs as the sun went down, running through the sprinkler on hot afternoons, drawing masterpieces with sidewalk chalk in the driveway, and eating popsicles that melted faster than they could keep up.

They'll remember blowing bubbles until bedtime, helping water the garden, swinging in the hammock, and picking tomatoes with you on warm summer evenings.

Those ordinary moments become the memories that define childhood.

And they deserve to be photographed.

Summer Is the Perfect Season to Slow Down

One of my favorite things about summer is that life naturally feels a little slower.

School is out.

Bedtimes become a little more flexible.

Families spend more time outside together.

The pressure to be constantly rushing from one activity to the next fades, making room for simple moments of connection.

Those are exactly the moments I love documenting.

Not perfectly posed smiles, but the way your child reaches for your hand.

The giggles when someone gets sprayed with the hose.

The way your toddler proudly hands you a dandelion.

The quiet snuggles on a blanket after everyone is worn out from playing.

These are the moments that will transport you back to this season years from now.

You Don't Have to Go Anywhere

One of the biggest benefits of an at-home family session is that everything you need is already there.

Your kids are comfortable in their own space.

They know where their favorite places to play are.

There's no pressure to keep little ones from wandering or climbing on rocks they've never seen before.

Instead, they're free to be themselves.

And because they're comfortable, parents usually feel more relaxed too.

The result isn't just beautiful photographs—it's a genuinely enjoyable evening together.

Let's Turn an Ordinary Summer Evening Into Something You'll Never Forget

Lately, I've been dreaming about creating more sessions that feel less like traditional family photos and more like documenting a summer evening together.

I'm picturing sprinklers running through the yard.

Ice cream cones dripping onto little fingers.

Bubbles floating through the air.

Barefoot kiddos running through the grass.

Picnics on a quilt.

Watering the garden together.

Reading books on the porch swing.

Picking flowers.

Chasing the family dog around the yard.

The kinds of moments that don't seem extraordinary while they're happening—but become priceless with time.

Because someday, your children won't remember whether the grass needed mowing or whether everyone had perfectly coordinated outfits.

They'll remember how it felt to be home.

And I think those are the memories worth preserving.

If this sounds like the kind of family session you've been dreaming about, I'd love to help tell your story this summer. Whether it's in your front yard, your backyard, or on the porch where you spend every evening together, we'll create photographs that feel like your family—because they truly are.
